Brought to fruition by more than thirty local inventors and innovative municipal funding, Chris Douglass' Ashmont Grill, like its sister restaurant and neighbor Tavolo, is one of those rare neighborhood restaurants that attracts people from other neighborhoods. The casual, modern bistro, which boasts two outdoor patios in its speedily gentrifying section of Dorchester, serves upscale comfort food for dinner and weekend brunch.
In keeping with Douglass' long-standing commitment to sustainability, the seasonally changing menu at Ashmont Grill is chock full of the locally caught, raised or grown seafood, meats and produce.

A Brookline native, Ashmont Grill Pastry Chef Clare Garland grew up in a cooking family. A fanatical fan of Julia Child (she never missed a show), Garland enrolled in her high school's culinary program as soon as she was able - and never looked back.
Garland got her feet wet at Edibles, a large - and very busy - retail/wholesale bakery serving upscale American pastries in Coolidge Corner. Working alongside Amy Rothenberg Snyder, she learned a lot during that time - about her own areas of interest as well as the ins and outs of a professional kitchen.
After Edibles, Garland worked at Devon on the Common, an early entry on Boston's fine dining scene. Next, she headed to the Tam O'Shanter, a night club with great food - and an even better dessert menu. Garland rounded out her experience and expertise with a stint at Ruby Chard Catering and teaching adult education classes. Even with three children at home, she continued to hone her skills - attending Newbury College and taking an online chocolatier course.
With a mind to open her own little bake shop someday, Garland finds an opportunity at each new position to learn. It's one of the things that keeps the field fresh and challenging. She finds inspiration among the pages of her favorite cookbooks, of which she has crates and crates.
When she's not in the kitchen, Garland likes to travel (when she can) and garden (when she can't).
